What to Expect

Starting with a new therapist can be daunting. I’m here to explain what my Music Therapy approach involves and how it can facilitate your growth and well-being. Hopefully, my explanations will help you to feel comfortable and confident in your decision to book with me.

The First Session

The first session is about getting to know you and your unique needs. We’ll discuss your goals, experiences, and how music has played a role in your life. We might try different music activities, such as listening to music together, singing, playing instruments, or even writing songs. You won’t need to do anything you’re not comfortable with—everything is tailored to your preferences and comfort levels.

The goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard and understood. Together, we’ll start exploring how music can help you process emotions, manage stress, and begin the journey toward healing and self-discovery.

Do I Need a Background in Music?

You don’t need any prior musical training or experience to benefit from music therapy. Every person has a natural, unique connection to music. My role is to help you tap into that connection, whether you’re an experienced musician or unsure about what kind of music you like.

If you do have a musical background, we can incorporate that into your sessions. If not, we’ll explore new and familiar music together, finding what resonates with you and facilitates your healing.

The Therapeutic Process

How does it work anyway?

Each person's pathway to wellness is different and it is usually not a linear process. However, there are some general stages and components that I am looking for when I work with someone.

01

Building Safety and Trust

The first stage is about developing a sense of safety and trust. It's crucial that you feel your emotions and creative expressions will be accepted and supported. This foundation of trust allows for open exploration and meaningful progress.

03

Grieving and Processing Past Wounds

As you gain insight, there may be a need to grieve and process past experiences, traumas, and losses. This stage is carefully supported to ensure that your emotions are managed in a way that allows you to continue functioning well in daily life and relationships. The goal is to release the hold that these past events have on you.

02

Exploring Your Inner World

Next, we seek to understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. We explore your sources of pain, problematic patterns, and uncover the emotions driving your actions. We notice unmet needs and skills that need to be developed. This stage is about gaining insight and laying the groundwork for deeper healing.

04

Healing and Discovering a New Way Forward

Finally, we focus on creating new, healthier patterns. Through music activities like songwriting, improvisation, and listening, you’ll begin to redefine your identity, improve your ability to connect with others, and discover a renewed sense of self. This stage is about fostering personal growth and building a future that aligns with your true desires.
